Making use of Jed in the ICT curriculum

The ICT Framework includes many teaching objectives that could make use of the data in Jed. At KS3 these include some within the Finding things out section where students use data and information sources to:-

  • Understand that different forms of information - text, graphics, sound, numeric data and symbols - can be combined to create meaning and impact.
  • Identify the purpose of an information source (e.g. to present facts or opinions, to advertise, publicise or entertain) and whether it is likely to be biased

.. and use searching and selecting to:

  • Search a variety of sources for information relevant to a task
  • Narrow down a search to achieve more relevant results.

Using a database such as Jed students can see how text, graphics, and video can create an understanding of work and that Jed is an unbiased source of careers information. Jed can be searched to select and extract information in such a way that it is more meaningful to the user. For example by viewing only jobs that need a degree.

In addition students at KS3 and at KS4 may be developing desktop publishing skills and presentation skills. In both cases the resources in Jed could be used to either create an information leaflet about a job or a short presentation about work in a particular area. These activities would focus on the development of ICT skills but use the resources with Jed to help the development of those skills.
