Advertise that job

Lesson

To assist students in understanding the skills and abilities involved in a job.

Context

All employers try to find the 'right' person to fill a vacancy. This not only involves placing an advert, but having a specification against which applicants can be measured.

Learning outcomes

Students can describe the skills/abilities and personal qualities needed for a particular job.

Level

Any group of students, the number of adverts and level of occupation being determined by their age and/or ability.

Resources

Blank paper and access to Jed.

Starter

Class to contribute ideas to a list of what they would expect to see in a job vacancy advert. Leave list visible for the remainder of the lesson.

Main

Select a job title in Jed. Use the information in the job record to design a vacancy advert for that job. Display the completed adverts on the classroom wall. In addition write a list of skills/abilities/personal qualities that you would look for at an interview for the vacancy. Display this alongside the advert.

Plenary

Discussion about elements that are common to many of the adverts and things you would not see in a job advertisement. Include discussion about equal opportunities and discrimination.

Extension activity

This activity could be extended by asking pupils to apply for one of the vacancies and the writer of the advert giving feedback on their application.
