To enable students to see the links between different jobs.
Many students find it difficult to see the interrelationships between different jobs, how one job can be connected to another. Linking pictures together showing different work activities and different job titles can illustrate the connections between jobs.
Students can list several jobs that are connected to each other.
Students can describe the effect this has on the way those jobs are done and the people who do them.
The activity can be used with students of any ability, the complexity of the links being determined by the ability of the students.
You will need to prepare either sets of picture cards or job title name cards for the students to use. Choose a job title and print a picture from Jed showing that job. Think of the jobs that are directly related to it. For each of these jobs, print a picture from Jed that illustrates a central aspect of that work. Print other pictures that do not seem to be directly related to the job you thought of first.
The associated document for this activity can be downloaded as a PDF file.
Generate a list of the different workers who have contributed to the students arriving in school this morning. All these jobs could be said to be linked in some way. Many jobs are dependent on others.
Arrange the cards to show which jobs are directly connected to the job you have been provided with, and identify those that are less directly related. Record your ideas and discuss how the jobs are connected to each other.
If some jobs are connected to other jobs, what effect will this have on the way those jobs are done?
A display could be made with the pictures arranged on a 'web' with linking lines to show how jobs are connected.
