Comparing work details. To introduce students to the tasks that may be performed in a job.
Students investigating the world of work may not fully understand exactly what is involved in a job simply by referring to the job title. This activity enables them to compare several jobs to pick out the tasks that may be involved.
Students will be able to list the tasks involved in selected job titles.
This activity is appropriate for any ability level, the complexity can be tailored to suit for example, by reducing or increasing the number of jobs compared and taking them from a particular level.
Access to Jed and the student instruction/answer sheet below.
The associated document/worksheet for this activity can be downloaded as a PDF file.
Ask the class to list a series of tasks that a shop assistant might have to perform during their working day. They need to understand that a job title is often not sufficient to fully describe what a person does in their job.
The activity sheet asks the students to identify which tasks match which job title – without looking up the job in Jed. They can then refer to the job record in Jed, in particular the 'What' section of Details, to review their answers. If their answers are different compared to Jed, this does not mean they are wrong, or that Jed is right. Jed cannot contain all tasks, there are often too many in a job.
Ask the students to discuss the differences.
To extend the work, students could write a job description for a particular job they are interested in and try to include as many tasks as possible.
